India needs young blood: Somnath Chatterjee

New Delhi, Mar 4: Somnath Chatterjee, Lok Sabha Speaker, lashed out at CPI-M, his former party and said that the party did 'huge blunder' by withdrawing support to the Congress led coalition government at the center there by reducing themselves to 'non-actor' in national politics.

He also said that the party has lost an opportunity to serve the people. Criticising CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat, Somnath said that the only credible leader of the party is Jyoti Basu, who is his mentor. The Speaker expressed his concern over the criminalisation and communalisation' of politics which he said had 'greatly vitiated the country's political system'.

Somnath criticised media for poor coverage of Parliamentary proceedings.

Speaker who is busy penning his memoirs asked the older politicians to give way for young blood. "To make our Parliament and political system more effective, India requires larger number of committed and well-meaning youth to come forward to occupy the political space," he said.

Manmohan Singh to call on President today

New Delhi, July 26: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will call on President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening. This will be the first formal call by Dr Singh on Mrs Patil after her assumption of office yesterday. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar had called on Mrs Patil and congratulated her. UNI.....
