New Delhi, Feb 27 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday said the Speaker should disassociate himself from his party after being elected to the post.

"Speaker's disassociation will help in making the Lok Sabha impartial," Chatterjee said after the main opposition alleged that he was behaving in a partisan manner.

He said that he was ready to quit from the post sometimes back, but the timely intervention of NDA Chairman Atal Behari Vajpayee and leaders of several other parties prevented him for going ahead.

Hitting out at his CPI-M, which had expelled him in July last year, the 80-year-old Veteran parliamentarian said that with the conclusion of the 14th Lok Sabha, he would no longer be involved in politics.

He, however, said that he was a Communist and that "Communism is not anybody's monopoly".

He said that he was now on the lookout for a place of retirement, and did not see himself taking up a gubernatorial assignment, even if offered.

India was unique on three ways- It had a Parliament that operated its own television channel, its members fixed their own salaries and judges appointed judges.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had described Chatterjee as the ideal role model for a Speaker transacting the business of the House.

He said that Chatterjee had during his five year tenure raised the bar of standard of the office for others to follow. (ANI)
