Obama pledges more military aid to Pak, Afghan
Washington, Feb 27: US President Barack Obama in his maiden budget presentation in the Congress have proposed more military aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The military aid is a bid to address the rise of al-Qaeda and Taliban in both the countries. Military aid to Pakistan was a matter of deep discussions in the US Senate.

However, this time Congressmen are pressuring to increase non-military aid by linking it with Islamabad's success in fight against terrorism. Obama's budget also proposes increasing non-military aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

This would provide additional funding for governance, reconstruction, counter-narcotics and other development activities.

To revitalise economic development and confront the resurgence of the Taliban, the State Department budget is planning to increase non-military aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The budget also proposes $ 533.7 billion for the Department of Defence base budget in 2010. This is a four percent increase from 2009.

The 2010 Budget refocuses US resources toward addressing the resurgence of al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
