New Delhi, Feb 26 (ANI): On the backdrop of violent protests in some parts of the Jammu and Kashmir against the killing of two youths, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday gave hint to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state.
"My government would work towards withdrawal of AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act from the valley," Abdullah said in his maiden speech to the Assembly after taking over as the chief of the state last month.
The Chief Minister was replying to the opposition People's Democratic Party's (PDP's) accusation to the backdrop of violent protests in some parts of the valley against the killing of two youths in Sopore town of Baramulla last week.
Abdullah also attacked the opposition for creating unrest among people by falsely implicating Army personnel in the recent murder cases.
The Army, however, opposed at revocation of the act.
"Any move to revoke AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir would be detrimental to the security of the Valley and would provide a boost to the terrorists," an Army official said. (ANI)
