Mayoral polls turn violent in Mysore

Mysore, Feb 20 (ANI): Mayoral polls in Mysore turned violent on Thursday.

Elections were being conducted for selecting a new mayor, deputy mayor and four committees for the local bodies.

They went on a rampage inside the corporation building saying the elections were being held in contravention to a court ruling.

"The call for the meeting has been illegal. One week notice was given, overlooking, we the representatives and the participatory local bodies," said S A Ramdas, CM's Parliamentary Secretary.

As per notification, along with the mayoral elections, four local bodies were also to be chosen on Thursday.

However, the Commissioner decided to choose just the mayor and deputy mayor.

Councillors belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party objected to this. Officials, however, said nothing was done against law.

"Nothing concrete has been received and nothing decided as yet," said A K Raikar, Commissioner, Mysore City Corporation.

According to reports, the ugly turn of events took place when an independent councillor tried to forge ties with a political outfit. (ANI)
