Tibetans protest China's 'Strike Hard' campaign in Lhasa

New Delhi, Feb. 5, (ANI): Hundreds of activists of Tibetan Youth Congress on Thursday staged a protest here against China's 'Strike Hard' campaign.

Chinese authorities in Lhasa started a 42-day winter 'Strike Hard' campaign last month to step-up vigilance against eruption of political protests and to maintain stability in the politically restive region of Tibet.

In Delhi, wielding Tibetans flags and shouting slogans, the activists claimed to have submitted a memorandum to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, who is on a day's visit to India.

"China launched a 'strike hard' campaign for 42 days. In this campaign, China can arrest any Tibetan who is involved in the peaceful protest. We want immediate withdrawal of the campaign," said Tenzin, Joint secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress.

During the 1980s and 1990s, regular "strike hard" campaigns were used to fight crime and threats to order, by mobilizing police and courts to catch and quickly put to trial and sentence thousands of citizens. (ANI)
