Gopalaswami questioned by others; BJP supports

N Gopalaswami
New Delhi, Jan 31: Chief Election Commissioner, N Gopalaswami's move to dismiss his colleague, Naveen Chawla has raised discontent among major political parties, but BJP has supported the move and sought action on the recommendation.

"The CEC's recommendation involves several intricate issues of law including the very jurisdiction of the CEC to exercise such powers on a colleague", Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

Congress party opined that such a controversy would hamper the prestige of the highest constitutional body of the country.

Terming the controversy as a 'political move', CPI National Secretary D Raja said, "The very timing of such a recommendation smacks of political motive, if at all. ... Time has come to examine the appointment and removal, powers and functions of the EC by Parliament."

Stating that the poll panel was at stake, BJP moved a petition on basis of recommendation of the Chief Election Commission (CEC) for removal of Chawla and demanded firm action.

"The credibility of the Election Commission is at stake with the CEC asking for the sacking of one of its members to the President," BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

"In the interest of the Constitution, in the interest of democracy, it is important that the President should intervene and take action for removal of Chawla," Rudy added.

Forward Bloc demanded intervention of President Pratibha Patil in the matter, RSP questioned the motive of the CEC in making such 'a suo moto' recommendation.
