Nashik, Jan 27: Soon after Raj Thackeray, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President revived his anti-North Indian campaign at a huge rally in Thane, clashes were reported on Monday, Jan 26 between the MNS activists and North-Indians in Satpur area of Mumbai. MNS activists tried to disrupt a cultural programme of North Indians and clash broke out.
Sources suggest that the a demonstration was staged by the MNS activists outside a Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) school in Satpur where the North Indians cultural programme was being held. During the cultural programme a session of Bhojpuri song was going on. MNS activists first held demonstration thinking that the crowd was celebrating 'Uttar Pradesh Din'. When the programme continued despite their agitation, the angry activists broke the school gates and entered the premises and started beating up the participants.
They also destroyed the pandal at the venue and burnt the carpets there. The participants tried to confront the agitators but could not succeed. Reports also suggest of stone pelting at the venue. Following the incident, police reached the spot and brought situation under control. Police said that the area is kept under vigil.
Meanwhile Vasant Gite, the MNS state General Secretary said that the programme was a show of strength and MNS will not allow such programmes.
Dr D L Kallad, CITU leader said, "North Indians celebrate cultural programme on Jan 26 every year. The National Integrity programme was organised to pay tribute to the martyrs of Nov 26 Mumbai attacks. The act of MNS is totally wrong. Police did not act despite demand of 'bandobast'. The MNS is getting hidden support from the Congress and the NCP."
Chaggan Bhujbal, the Deputy Chief Minister and District Guardian Minister of Maharashtra said that strict legal action will be taken against the miscreants. Police said that 8 MNS activists are so far arrested in connection with the incident.
