Lok Sabha Polls in April-May: Gopalaswamy
New Delhi, Dec 8: N Gopalaswamy, the Chief Election Commissioner of India has said that General Elections are likely to be held between the mid April and mid May. There were reports that the Lok Sabha elections may be preponed after the vote counting results of the five states, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattiagarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and Mizoram are out. The results will be out by Monday, Dec 8 evening.

The voting began on Nov 14 in Chhattisgarh and ended on Dec 4 in Jaipur. Gopalaswamy said in all the five states, photo electoral roll was an important exercise. He expressed his concern over the distribution of cash and liquor in elections. He said it is a worrying trend. Nearly 66 pc of the 9.8 crore voters in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh exercised their franchise.

CEC said that normally as a convention the elections are held just before the government's term ends. "Elections will take place in the normal course," he said. When asked whether elections will be held only in April-May, he said there were "no procedural difficulties" in holding them earlier.
