New Delhi, Nov 21: 'Delight' the Hong Kong registered cargo ship which was hijacked by the Somali pirates on Wednesday, Nov 19 has seven Indians onboard among the 25 crew members.
The Indians are identified (6 seamen and a cook) as Rajeeb Lochan Behera, Kamlajeet Singh, Mahmood Aslam Lambade, Raque Tapazzal, Shamsul Hassan Israr, Bappathoithy Sheikh Abdul Jabar and Clive Fernandes. Other crew members are from Iran, the Philippines, Pakistan and Guyana. The ship which was carrying 26,000 tons of wheat was heading for city of Bandar Abbas, the Iranian port city when it was hijacked. It was attacked in Gulf of Aden. This recent hijack occured just a day after the Indian Navy attacked and sinked Somali pirates' mother ship.
Nur Hassan Hussein, the Somalian Prime Minister said that these piracy problems are not limited only within Somalia alone, but is affecting globally also. He added that the Transitional Federal Government does not have the capacity to combat and eradicate the piracy which is becoming a concern for whole world.
Red Sea nations are in emergency talks on Somali piracy. On Friday, Nov 21 the Arab Red Sea states are holding an emergency meet to discuss the threat of piracy off Somalia.
Pirates had on Monday, Nov 17 seized the Saudi-owned Sirius Star oil tanker, the largest ship yet taken and the attack furthest away from Somalia. The ship's owners are negotiating with the pirates.
