Maharashtra: Curfew relaxed in riot-hit Dhule

Dhule, Maharashtra, Oct 17: Police today withdrew the curfew clamped in this riot-hit town following situation returning to normalcy.

The indefinite curfew was clamped on October 5 following violence that rocked the town. Police, however, said tight security arrangements would continue for some more days.

At least 10 people were killed and 100 injured during the riots.

Meanwhile, life has returned to normalcy in the town with schools, colleges, shops, government and private offices functioning regularly.

The work for giving compensation to the riot-hit people was in progress. The Dhule Municipal Corporation will give Rs 7,500 and the state government will give Rs 5,000 aid to the owners of the 475 houses damaged in the riots. Compensation will be given to traders and shopkeepers also. The total loss of 276 shops is around Rs 5.5 crore. The overall loss during the riots has been estimated at Rs 20 crore, sources said.

Bird flu spreads to new areas in Assam

Kamrup (Assam), Dec 6: With a fresh outbreak of bird flu in poultry being detected in Assam, authorities are prepared to start the culling of thousands of chickens.Reports say the virus has spread to the districts of Barpeta and Nalbari from Hajo in Kamrup District, where it was first reported. Samples were sent to laboratories in Bhopal and have tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza.The State Government has ordered culling operations and culling officers have already started going.....
