Orkut bans Indian Mujahideen community

New Delhi, Sep 26: Google's social networking site Orkut on Thursday, Sep 25 banned a community named as 'Indian Mujahideen'. This move came after the Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 serial blasts in New Delhi allegedly carried out by a terror outfit named Indian Mujahideen.

A Google spokesperson said: "Google strongly condemns illegal activities and those that encourage terrorism and violence." We take abuse on Orkut very seriously as such activities diminish the experience for our users," the spokesperson added. Indian Mujahideen, the terror outfit that had claimed responsibility for the July 26 Ahmedabad blasts, said it had carried out the serial blasts in Delhi as well, in an email to media organizations.

"The communities and profiles indulging in illegal activities are a clear violation of our terms and condition," the Google spokesperson said, and added, “We treat requests from law enforcement agencies, coming in through the appropriate legal process, with priority in terms of reviewing them and take prompt and effective action if the content report violates our terms of service that prohibit illegal activity."

There are various communities on Orkut which are dedicated to different areas like environment, education, health, peace, poverty, educational institutions and cultural and religious groups.
