Prisoners to be shifted to safer areas due to flood in Bihar

Patna, Aug 26 (UNI) More than 550 inmates in the flood-affected north Bihar would be shifted to the Saharsa Correctional Home today after the prisoners' cells in the Madhepura jail were submerged in flood waters.

Official sources quoted IG, Prison, Sandweep Poundarik as saying that the decision to shift the prisoners to a safer place was taken last night, after surging flood waters posed a serious threat to the inmates of Madhepura jail by partially inundating their cells.

Accordingly, all arrangements were made to ensure the safe passage of about 550-odd prisoners to the Saharsa Correctional Home, about 200 km away, under tight security, the sources said, adding that the entire process would be completed by this evening.

Incidentally, this would be the first instance that such a large number of jail inmates would be shifted from one jail to another because of floods.

PMK launches campaign against drinking

Chennai, Aug 26: The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which has launched a campaign against the evils of drinking, on Tuesday, Aug 26 presented an alternative prohibition policy, aimed at imposing total prohibition in Tamil Nadu.
