Orissa violence: Catholic institutions to 'close down' on Aug 29

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) Catholic educational institutions all over the country would observe a 'close down' this Friday to express solidarity with ''suffering brothers and sisters'' in Orissa affected by the ''calibrated malicious campaign'' against Christians by unruly organisations of the state.

Calling for a 'bandh' on August 29, the Catholics Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) today said the Catholic community would hold peaceful rallies across the country to register its protest against repeated attacks one Christians.

''We have also exhorted people to observe a day of prayer and fasting on Sunday, September 7, to promote communal harmony and peace in the country,'' said CBCI president Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil.

Urging all political, religious and social organisations to desist from spreading communal hatred, the CBCI president said ''we appeal to the state and central government to take strong measures to curb violence.'' UNI AN SB AS1808

Historical monument collapses, kills 2

Bijapur, Karnataka, Aug 26 (UNI) Following heavy rainfall that lashed the city last night, the 500-year-old 'Ambarkhana,' a historical monument, collapsed killing two persons. Police said Ashok Sidramappa Dhotaragavi (42) and his daughter Sudha (14) were killed when huge stones from the monument came rolling down. They were fast asleep in their tin shed next to the structure. Assistant Commissioner Y S Patil and Tahasildar S S Nagathan visited the spot early this morning to take.....

Shibu Soren to take oath tomorrow, UPA meeting held

Ranchi, Aug 26 (UNI) JMM president Shibu Soren(64) will take oath as Jharkhand Chief Minister for the second time tomorrow, after nearly three-and-half year of wait. Mr Soren announced this after a UPA meeting was held here. The meeting was also attended by senior Congress leaders-- Subodhkant Sahay, Furkan Ansari (both MPs) besides other RJD leaders. The JMM persident, however, did not disclose how many would be sworn-in tomorrow. Mr Soren, MP from Dumka, was expected to.....

NZC names A team for India, Australia tour

Christchurch, Aug 26 (UNI) With an eye on the future, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has named its A team which will tour Australia and India over the next two months. The team's selection was delayed while the future of Pakistan's Champions Trophy was in doubt over security fears. It has now been postponed until next year. New Zealand coach John Bracewell said the team has been named keeping in mind the future prospects and added that.....
