NSCW plea for women police cell in Nagaland

Kohima, Aug 26 (UNI) The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has appealed the state government to immediately set up women police cell in all the eleven district headquarters to look into violence, cases of injustice and crimes against women.

According to the NSCW members, who made an extensive tour to all the districts received numerous complaints that crimes against women were on the rise. They said unless and until a separate women police cell was setup, the issues on the women could not be redressed judiciously.

The NSCW has pointed out that barring Kohima and Dimapur districts, other districts have no women police cell. The NSCW also urged the government to recruit women police as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which has made mandatory for all states to have ten per cent women in the strength of the police force.

According to the Commission, at present the women police constitute only two per cent in the strength of state police force.

The NSCW said the government should set up a separate cell for women inmates in the district jails. The Commission has urged the government to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in all municipal and town councils of the state.
