NJP adopts family of freedom fighter VOC

Chennai, Aug 26 (UNI) The New Justice Party (NJP) today adopted the family of late freedom Fighter V O Chidambaram Pillai (VOC) and urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to announce an assistance of Rs ten lakh each to four of his grand children.

Talking to newspersons here, NJP founder A C Shanmugham said after coming to know about the plight of the freedom fighter's family members through the media, the NJP decided to adopt his grand-children and their great-grand-children.

NJP VOC Peravai functionaries Selvaraj Pillai and Nagaraja Pillai brought V C Dhanalakshmi Chidambaram, V C Arumuga Pillai, V C Sankaran Pillai and V C Somandeeswaran Pillai to Chennai where they were formally adopted.

Thanking TNCC President K V Thangkabalu for his gesture to purchase a house for the family in Madurai, Mr Shanmugham said the NJP would take care of the total maintenance of the family.

Apart from purchasing a house for them, the NJP would also bear the total educational expenses of their three great-grand-children, who are in the age group of seven to nine, till they complete their Engineering courses.

Considering the plight of the family members, Mr Karunanidhi, who had initiated several welfare measures, whould announce an assistance of Rs ten lakh each to the family members.

Mr Shanmugham also renewed his demand for installing a statue of the late freedom fighter in Parliament in recognition of his role during Independence.

The NJP would launch peaceful agitations in 50 places all over Tamil Nadu on September five, the birth anniversary of VOC, to draw the Centre's attention in this regard.

Talking about Politics, Mr Shanmugham said his party would definitely have an alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls and it would be decided at the time of elections.

He also took exception to petroleum dealers association's move to close down petrol bunks on Sundays and restrict sale of petrol and diesel from 0600 hrs to 2200 hrs from Septemebr 15.

''This will lead to more scarcity and people will be put to great hardship in the event of any emergency in their family'', he said and added that at least 25 to 50 per cent of the bunks should be opened on Sundays for the benefit of public.

Woman burnt alive in Bargarh, Orissa
