Merit list scandal in C'garh, 5 arrested

Janjgir, Chhattisgarh, Aug 26 (UNI) Police have arrested a girl student and four teachers on the charge of using fraudulent means to help a village girl to attain top position in the merit list of XIIth class examination conducted by the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education this year.

Birra village-resident Porabai, who secured top position in merit list, and four teachers were arrested on August 24 following investigation by the Board revealed her answer sheets were changed and other irregularities committed.

Porabai had secured 580 marks out of 600 marks gaining 96.85 per cent.

Janjgir Judicial Magistrate Sajeshwari Dewangan has sent all of them to police custody till August 27. Police have Champa Deputy Superintendent of Police S R Bhagat told UNI that a special team had carried out the investigation and registered cases against Porabai and eight teachers of concerned examination centre and school.

Police were searching for four other teachers. The culprits had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the district sessions court recently but was rejected. The accused then moved the High Court but the matter was under consideration.

Now, a low-cost system to thwart Internet eavesdropping

Washington, August 26 : Carnegie Mellon University experts say that they have developed a low-cost system that can reduce the risk of eavesdropping on Internet communications. The researchers say that their system, called Perspectives, can also offer protection against attacks related to a recently disclosed software flaw in the Domain Name System (DNS), the Internet phone book used to route messages between computers. Man held for possessing unlicensed gun

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 26 (UNI) Police arrested a 45-year-old man for possessing a unlicensed country-made gun and moving around the forest area in a suspicious manner at Uppliapuram near Thuraiyur here. A police party intercepted Sundararaj of Suklampatti Kombai yesterday from a tribal village located atop at Kolli hills in Namakkal District and seized the gun from him, police said. Bomb scare at Kurla rly station turns out hoax

Mumbai, Aug 26: An anonymous call received by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) last night, threatening to blow up platform number seven and eight at the Kurla railway station, turned out to be a hoax. At around 2230 hrs, RPF control room at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) received an anonymous call, saying platform number seven and eight on Harbour line would be blown up on August 26 between 0700 and 1000 hrs. 'Rok sako to rok lo' (stop it if you can), police.....
