India offers to strengthen Bhutan's democratic institutions

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) Vice-President Hamid Ansari today offered to help Bhutan in strengthening its nascent democratic institutions.

Mr Ansari, Chairman of Rajya Sabha, made the offer when a 13-member Bhutanese parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Lyonpo Jigme Tshultim met him here.

Mr Tshultim said Bhutan being the youngest and smallest democracy need to learn a lot from the world's largest democracy. He invited Mr Ansari to visit the Himalayan state.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee admired Bhutan's smooth and orderly transition to democracy recently and said it is a reflection of Bhutanese King's vision and democratic credentials.

Describing the Indo-Bhutanese relationship as "unshakeable", Mr Chatterjee assured the delegation of India's support and cooperation in the development needs of the Bhutanese people.

Reciprocating the sentiments, Mr Tshultim lauded India's support and assistance for Bhutan's develoment and its smooth transition to democracy.

Bihar Governor injured in road accident in Amritsar

Amritsar, Aug 26 (UNI) Bihar Governor R L Bhatia today received minor head injury when his car banged into the pilot car near Ranjit Avenue on way to airport. The accident occurred when the pilot car suddenly came to a halt after being hit by a speeding vehicle coming from the opposite direction, police sources said. No need of panic buying, petrol bunks to work 24x7: Minister

Chennai, Aug 26 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today said petrol bunks in the state would function round-the-clock without any weekly holiday and asked people not to resort to panic buying of petrol and diesel. State Food Minister E V Velu clarified the position a day after the Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association declared that they would close down petrol bunks on Sundays and restrict the working hours from 0600 to 2200 hrs with effect from.....

Aurobindo Society wants probe into murder

Kozhikode, Aug 26 (UNI) Sri Aurobindo Service Society (SASS) today demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the August 23 murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanand Saraswati in Orissa. Condemning the murder, the SASS, in a release here, said Swamiji 'obstructed forceful conversion and transportation of children to orphanages and seminaries in South India' thus developing enmity with large number of non-governmental organisations and foreign funding agencies in the Eastern.....
