Historical monument collapses, kills 2

Bijapur, Karnataka, Aug 26 (UNI) Following heavy rainfall that lashed the city last night, the 500-year-old 'Ambarkhana,' a historical monument, collapsed killing two persons.

Police said Ashok Sidramappa Dhotaragavi (42) and his daughter Sudha (14) were killed when huge stones from the monument came rolling down. They were fast asleep in their tin shed next to the structure.

Assistant Commissioner Y S Patil and Tahasildar S S Nagathan visited the spot early this morning to take stock of the situation.

A solatium of Rs two lakh was announced by the official to the kin of the two victims.Police have registered a case.

Indian junior team leaves for FIBA Asia Basketball Championship

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) The Indian team left to participate in the 20th FIBA Asia Basketball Championship for junior men at Tehran, Iran which gets underway from 28th August. India has been placed in Group A which also include China, Japan and Hong Kong. Police use tear gas to control irate protesters in Jammu

Jammu, August 26 : Police in Jammu had to resort to tear gassing on Tuesday to control violent protesters alleging police excesses in Digiana on Monday. Protesters clashed with the police in Purani Mandi area of the city, forcing the police to use tear gas to disperse them. They pelted stones at the police leading to ding dong battles in the narrow by-lanes of the area. The protesters threatened to carry out more violent agitations if the administration tried to stop them......
