28 growth in I-T collection targetted

Bilaspur, Aug 26(UNI) The Income Tax department has set a target to collect Income Tax of Rs 2426 crore this year, about 28 percent higher than the actual collection of Rs 1888 crore during 2007-08.

Bilaspur division topped in tax collection totalling Rs 1202 crore last year and current year's target was Rs 1547 crore, according to Chhattisgarh's Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Kamlesh Argal.

He told reporters here that there were several such commercial organisations in the state which showed an annual income of Rs one or Rs two lakhs despite carrying out a sales turnover of above Rs two crore per year.

Stating that it was rare to see commercial organisations doing business at less than ten percent profit, he said such organisations would be put under scrutiny. There was substantial increase in amount collected under Tax Deducted at Source, Mr Argal added.

Man held for possessing unlicensed gun

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 26 (UNI) Police arrested a 45-year-old man for possessing a unlicensed country-made gun and moving around the forest area in a suspicious manner at Uppliapuram near Thuraiyur here. A police party intercepted Sundararaj of Suklampatti Kombai yesterday from a tribal village located atop at Kolli hills in Namakkal District and seized the gun from him, police said. Bomb scare at Kurla rly station turns out hoax

Mumbai, Aug 26: An anonymous call received by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) last night, threatening to blow up platform number seven and eight at the Kurla railway station, turned out to be a hoax. At around 2230 hrs, RPF control room at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) received an anonymous call, saying platform number seven and eight on Harbour line would be blown up on August 26 between 0700 and 1000 hrs. 'Rok sako to rok lo' (stop it if you can), police.....

Godhra incident: Time till Dec 31 to Raghavan Committee for probe

New Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) The Supreme Court today granted time till December 31 to the R K Raghavan Committee to complete the probe into the Godhra train burning incident. A bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam adjourned the hearing. Justice Pasayat lost his temper over the submission of Senior Counsel K T S Tulsi when the latter remarked that ''this honourable court has suspended the Constitution with one stroke of.....
