Shyam Benegal Lauds Malayalam cinema

Thrissur, Aug 22 (UNI) Noted film director Shyam Benegal inaugurated a week long at the Thrissur international film festival (TIFF) at the Kairali and Sree thaters here today.

He said the cultural heritage of Kerala, espically in the field of arts and literature helped the state to produce quality films.

He congragulated the artistes who had commandable achievements in the Malayalam film world.

Turkish Director Bilge Caylan's "TREE MONKEYS", which had won an award for the best director at the cannes international film festival, was the opening film at the festival.

78 films from 20 countries will be exhibited in the festival.

Islamabad, Aug 22 (UNI) The Pakistan Peoples Party today nominated its co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari as the PPP's presidential candidate. Mumbai, Aug 22 (UNI) The trial of the Haj House Imam Gulam Yahya, allegedly involved with Kashmiri militants, today began before a new Judge A S Patankar at a fast track court here. Poppy husk smuggler sent to 10-year jail
