Nepal Cabinet formed, UML refuses to take oath

Kathmandu, Aug 22 (UNI) An eight member Cabinet has been announced by Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda including four each from the Maoists and the MJF this evening but the UML refused to take oath demanding second position in the Cabinet.

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', in the presence of President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly nominated Ministers at the President's office Shital Niwas today.

Four new Ministers from the Maoist include Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai (Finance), Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal (Defence), Dev Gurung (Law, Justice) and Krishna Bahadur Mahara (Information and Communication) while Ministers from MJF include party chairman Upendra Yadav (Foreign Affairs), Bijay Kumar Gachhadar (Works and Transport), Jay Prakash Gupta (Agriculture) and Renu Yadav (Education).

The UML nominees refused to take oath after they demanded that their leader be given second position in the Cabinet after PM.

However, Dr Bhattarai was given the second position in the Cabinet.

The UML has decided not to join the government if it does not get the second position in the Cabinet portfolio, it is said.

Mr Prachanda is leaving for China tomorrow to attend the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. He is also scheduled to meet Chinese presient Hu Jintao during his three day visit to China.

13 arrested in connection with vehicle-lifting

Bhopal, Aug 22 (UNI) Thirteen people were today arrested and 23 vehicles worth Rs 8.5 lakh seized from Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, police said. Those arrested include eight people who had purchased stolen motorcycles. SP Harinarayan Chari Mishra said special team had been constituted to tackle the increasing number of vehicles thefts. Police seize eight country-made guns,two revolvers

Theni, Tamil Nadu Aug 22 (UNI) In a massive crack down against illegal arms to curb nefarious activities, police confiscated eight country-made guns and two revolvers during the past two days and arrested 11 persons in the naxalite-infested Theni district here. Following Intelligence agency reports, that illegal fire-arms are in circulation in Theni,the police in coordination with State 'Q' branch are cracking down on the illicit arms, a senior police official said here. HC directs police to give protection to MG Univerity VC

Kochi, Aug 22 (UNI) Kerala High Court today directed police to provide protection to Mahatma Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Jancy James. A Division Bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and A K Basheer also cautioned police that if there was any default on the part of police in giving protection to Ms James, the court would view the matter very seriously and deal with it firmly.
