Manipur rivers in spate, trucks with essentials stranded

Imphal, Aug 22 (UNI) Movement of traffic carrying essentials was affected on NH-39 forcing more than 400 trucks to park at Dimapur, Nagaland, and Assam following heavy rains for past few days, reports here said today.

Rains also threatened to breach embankments of many rivers in Manipur as water level was flowing at danger marks.

The Nagaland government has asked the Manipur government not to allow trucks to carry more than 14 tonnes of load on NH-39, Imphal, Dimapur highway.

At Dimapur, Manipur bound trucks have been stranded and their numbers were increasing, officials said.

Due to heavy rainfall during the last few days, the major rivers in Manipur Nambul, Iril and their tributaries have been flowing at a high level, officials said.

Farmers protest absence of Collector at grievances meeting

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 22 (UNI) Farmers association repesentatives who came to attend a farmers' grievance day meeting staged a walk out here today protesting against the failure of District Collector T Soundiah to turn up. The collector asked his juniors to hold the meeting along with other officals as he was away at another meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary J K Tripathy. BJP members arrested for demonstrating on Amarnath issue

Vijaywada,Aug 22 (UNI) As many as 90 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists and its local leaders were arrested when they staged a demonstration at the Sub-Collector's office here today over the Amarnath issue.
