HC directs police to give protection to MG Univerity VC

Kochi, Aug 22 (UNI) Kerala High Court today directed police to provide protection to Mahatma Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Jancy James.

A Division Bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and A K Basheer also cautioned police that if there was any default on the part of police in giving protection to Ms James, the court would view the matter very seriously and deal with it firmly.

The court gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by Ms James stating on August 18, a group of students under the banner of Students' Federation of India (SFI), blocked her way while a female student tried to push her down.

Ms James further submitted that she had to go on leave following the incident and needed police protection to discharge her duties as the Vice Chancellor.

The court had also issued notices to the State Chief Secretary, Kottayam District SP and the SFI leaders.

Soldier commits suicide in Sriganganagar

Jaipur, Aug 22 (UNI) An army personnel commited suicide in the army cantt. in Sriganganagar town early today, police sources said. The sources said that Anil Yadav(24) of Ganesh purwa in the Bara Banki district(UP), was deployed on guard duty at the officers mess last night. After completing his shift he returned to the camp near the mess and shot himself. The Army authorities and police were investigating in the case, the sources said. UNI SS RR.....

Two jawans injured in encounter with ultras in Latehar

Latehar, Aug 22 (UNI) A CRPF jawan and a Special Task Force personnel were injured in an encounter with maoists at Laat village under Barwadih Police Station area in this district today. Police said the jawans, Nandu Das from STF and Kisan Gora from CRPF, were taken to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi. The encounter lasted two hours. UNI XC-AM PC RR ND2040.....

Famine takes lives mostly children in Myammar: Relief Committee

Aizawl, Aug 22 (UNI) More than 44 people, mostly children have died of famine in Chin state of Myanmar bordering Mizoram, according to Aizawl-based Chin Humanitarian and Relief Committee. The famine triggered by Mautam or gregarious bamboo flowering causing crop failure in Mizoram and neighbouring Myanmar. The cyclic bamboo flowering phenomenon which occurs every 48 years have also resulted in acute rice shortage in Mizoram due to rodent proliferation resulted by the bamboo flowers. Mizoram shares.....
