Govt gives Rs 3.77 cr to seafood units

New Delhi, Aug 22 (UNI) The government today said it has provided a financial assistance of Rs 3.77 crore to seafood processing units this year to boost production.

Stating this in his inaugural address at the 3-day International Livestocks and Dairy Expo which opened here, Food Processing Industries Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said the government will provide Rs 628 crore for modernisation of abattoirs under public private partnership (PPP) scheme during the 11th-plan period.

He said consumption of meat and meat products is gradually increasing in the country, adding that poultry meat is the fastest growing animal protein. Its per capita consumption has grown from 870 grams in 2000 to about 1.68 kg in 2005, he said, adding this is expected to grow up to 2 kg in 2009.

Animal Husbndary Dairy and Fisheres Secretary Pradeep Kumar lamented that 30 per cent of 64 lakh tonnes of fish production in the country is wasted because of lack of required infrastructure.

However, the government is determined to achieve production target of 95 lakh tonnes by 2010, he added.

More than 100 exhibitors from India and over 70 from Thailand, China, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Australia, Germany, Holland, Vietnam, Korea, Philippines are participating in the expo.

Govt not to involve in land acquisition for pvt industries

Hyderabad, Aug 22 (UNI) In a major policy decision, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided not to make any 'large scale' acquisition of land for private industries henceforth, Revenue Minister D Prasada Rao said today. ''Land owners are free to negotiate with the private parties and sell their lands only if they are satisfied with the price offered. The government will not invoke the provisions of Land Acquisition Act for the benefit of private parties,'' he told.....

SIMI suspects seek bail from K'taka HC

Hubli, Aug 22 (UNI) Four suspected SIMI operatives who are now in different jails in Belgaum and Bellary today filed an appeal to Karnataka High Court bench in Dharwad seeking bail. The suspects, Asadulla, Dr Mirja Ahamed, Yahya Kamkoti and Sayad Siddiqi have been in jail for the past six months as undertrials on the charges of hatching terrorist activities in Karnataka and Goa. The Davangere and CoD police had arrested them as they were allegedly.....

Union Minister calls for joint participation of corporates, NGOs

Kakinada, Aug 22 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Defence M M Pallamraju today called upon the corporate sector and Non-Governmental Organisations to participate in the welfare and development schemes initiated by the government. Addressing a joint meeting of the representatives of corporate bodies and NGOs at the Collectorate here, the Minister wanted joint participation for effective implementation of welfare schemes such as Rajiv Education Mission and National Rural Health Mission. He opined that concerted efforts.....
