Goa govt to provide Rs 900 lakh subsidy to KTCL

Panaji, Aug 22 (UNI) Goa government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 900 lakh as subsidy to the state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) for the current fiscal.

Replying to an unstarred question, tabled in the state legislative assembly today, transport minister Ramakrishna Davalikar told the House that subsidy amounting to Rs 653.5 lakh, Rs 1,100 lakh and Rs 800 lakh for the years 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively were provided.

The subsidy was towards purchase of buses, diesel/petrol/spares, replacement of old buses and payment of salaries to the staff, he said.

For the current fiscal, the government had budgeted Rs 300 lakh towards investment in public sector undertakings, including the KTCL, he added.

Manipur rivers in spate, trucks with essentials stranded

Imphal, Aug 22 (UNI) Movement of traffic carrying essentials was affected on NH-39 forcing more than 400 trucks to park at Dimapur, Nagaland, and Assam following heavy rains for past few days, reports here said today. Rains also threatened to breach embankments of many rivers in Manipur as water level was flowing at danger marks. The Nagaland government has asked the Manipur government not to allow trucks to carry more than 14 tonnes of load on NH-39,.....

Famine takes lives, mostly children in Myammar: Relief Committee

Aizawl, Aug 22 (UNI) More than 44 people, mostly children, have died of famine in Chin state of Myanmar bordering Mizoram, according to Aizawl-based Chin Humanitarian and Relief Committee. The famine triggered by Mautam or gregarious bamboo flowering causing crop failure in Mizoram and neighbouring Myanmar. The cyclic bamboo flowering phenomenon which occurs every 48 years have also resulted in acute rice shortage in Mizoram due to rodent proliferation, resulted by the bamboo flowers.
