Desarda blames Mah govt for the drought-like situation

Pune, Aug 22 (UNI) Noted economist and former member of the Maharashtra Planning Commission Prof H M Desarda today blamed the State Government's policies and poor management for the drought-like situation and water scarcity in the state, stating this was purely a man-made crisis.

Delivering a lecture on ''Man Made Famine and water scarcity in Maharashtra'' at the Gokhale institute of politics and economics here, Prof Desarda said lack of rain was not the problem but poor management by the state government to handle the water situation year after year had created the situation.

Advocating implementation of rain harvesting and water shed development project on a big scale, Prof Desarda said the situation has to be taken seriously by the people of the state.

He said educating people and making aware of the rain harvesting method is a way of overcoming the water crisis. Without people's participation there would be no solution, Prof Desarda observed.

Nearly one fourth construction of Dhamra Port completed

Bhubaneswar, Aug 22 (UNI) Nearly one fourth of the construction work of the Dhamra port in Bhadrak district has already been completed, Commerce Minister Jayanarayan Mishra told the Assembly today. One killed, two injured in road accidents

Tezpur, Aug 22 (UNI) One person was killed and two injured in seperate road accidents in Assam's Sonitpur district today. In the first accident, two motor-cycle-borne persons were injured when their motorbike hit a school bus near Tezpur town. One of the riders died on way to Guwahati, while the other sustained serious injuries. In the other accident, a passenger bus and truck collided head-on at Alisinga under Dhekiajuli police station. 21 state owned companies making profit in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Aug 22 (UNI) Orissa government has pursued a policy of selective privatisation of loss making public and co-operative corporations operating in non-core sectors, Public Enterprise minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo told the Assembly today. Replying to a question of Mr Bimal Lochan Das (JMM), the minister said the primary objective of the policy was to revive potentially viable loss making enterprises.
