Wanted criminal dies in police encounter

Ghazipur, Aug 21 (UNI) Mohammad Shah Alam, a hardcore criminal and prime accused in the murder case of a Congress leader was gunned down in a police encounter in Kareemuddinpur area here this morning.

On a tip-off, the outlaws were intercepted by the sleuths near Pradhapur village.

In a bid to escape, the criminals opened fire on the police to which the cops retaliated resulting in the death of Alam, Superintendent of Police (SP) Brijraj Meena said.

Meanwhile, his accomplice managed to escape.

A foreign-made pistol and a 32-bore pistol were seized from the deceased, the SP added.

Alam had a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head and many criminal cases, including murder of Congress leader Harchand Singh Barar in Sirsa district of Haryana were pending against him.

Inspector General of Police (Varanasi) has announced reward of Rs 10,000 to the police team.

CM keen to bring more higher educational institutes: Minister

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 21 (UNI) State Transport Minister, K N Nehru today said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was very keen on bringing more and more Central Government's higher educational institutes like IIM, IIT to Tamil Nadu.
