Sarkozy says troops must stay in Afghanistan

Orly/ Kabul, Aug 21, 2008: An emotional President Sarkozy insisted on Wednesday, Aug 20 that there would be no French wobble over Afghanistan, urging troops in Kabul to fight with fresh resolve after the loss of ten comrades.

Ten soldiers were killed in a major battle that erupted when Taliban insurgents ambushed a French patrol in Afghan capital on Monday, Aug 18. In a short visit, Sarkozy first paid his respects to the dead soldiers. Despite the deaths, Sarkozy said French troops must stay in Afghanistan to fight terrorism.

Afghan Taliban threaten to kill German hostages

Kabul, July 21: Afghanistan's Taliban movement threatened to kill two German hostages if its demand were not met by 1300 hrs today, a spokesman for the militant group said. The Taliban is demanding release of all its members in Afghan prisons and the withdrawal of German troops from Afghanistan. ''The Taliban leadership council has set 12:00 (local time) as deadline for the two German hostages. And if the deadline is not met, we will.....
