UBI opens new branch in Chennai

Chennai, August 21 (UNI) Union Bank of India, one of the top five public sector banks in the country, today opened its new branch at Velachery in the city.

The branch, 49th in Chennai and 156th in Tamil Nadu, was inaugurated by UBI Director K S Srinivasan.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the bank would open new branches at Kolathur, Alandur, B and C Mill (Perambur), West Tambaram and Pallavaram soon.

UBI General Manager P Y Nagar said the bank has targeted a total business of Rs 2,20,000 crore for 2008-09. The bank was making profits right from its existence and has a customer base of 20 million.

The total business of the bank crossed Rs 1,83,058 crore as on June 30, 2008. It has recorded a net profit of Rs 1,387 crore as on March 31 this year, a growth of 64.14 per cent.

Union Minister announces schemes for naxal-affected areas

Guntur, Aug 21 (UNI) Union Minister of state for commerce and power Jairam Ramesh today said the UPA Government at the centre was implementing the developmental schemes in the naxal-affected tribal areas to check the naxal menace. Talking to reporters here he said the Rubber Board and Cofee Board under Union Ministry of Commerce would go in for a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with APITDA and Naandi foundation, an NGO at Hyderabad tomarrow to promote coffee.....

Jacob gets 'Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award'

Kochi, Aug 21 (UNI) POABS Group Chairman P A Jacob has been selected for the ''Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award'' instituted by the National Integration and Economic Council, New Delhi. The award will be presented away by Haryana Governor A R Kidwai at a function to be held at New Delhi on August 24, according to an official release here today. No shortage of diesel supply: Chief Secretary

Chennai, Aug 21 (UNI) Allaying fears over the short supply of diesel, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary L K Tripathy today said oil companies have assured to provide uninterrupted supply to meet the increasing demand. Talking to reporters after a review meeting with the representatives of three oil companies, IT and Textile industry at the State Secretariat here, he said the demand has increased by 30 to 35 per cent this year compared to last year.
