Trials commence on the third runway at IGI

New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) new runway, which will help the airport deal with increased air traffic, has been opened for trials.

''With the opening of the third runway IGI has become the only airport in the country to have this facility and joins the elite club of other South East Asian airports which are equipped with this,'' said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel while inaugurating the third terminal.

The 4.4 Km long and 75-meter-wide third runway which has been named 11-29 will be able handle wide bodied aircraft like Airbus A-380.

Trials would continue for at least one week and operations would begin by August 28, after all airlines agree to use it and DGCA gives a nod.

With the inauguration of the third runway and the implementation of new performance-based navigation (PBN) system , air traffic movement at the airport is likely to become much easier over the next one week.

The new runway will also nearly double the airport's peak hour capacity from 35-40 aircraft movements currently to about 75.

Longer than 4km, the new runway is among the longest in Asia-the Kuala Lumpur International Airport has one that is 4.12km long and capable of handling the super jumbo Airbus SAS-made A380 planes and assist with specialised equipment flights to land even in low-visibility fog or dust-storm conditions.

Continuing with the policy, a new domestic terminal is also expected to be ready at the Delhi Airport by the end of the current year for which a capex of Rs 500 crore has been enmarked.
