Rising number of dengue, malaria cases this year: MCD

New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) Expressing concern over the rising number of malaria and dengue cases, acting Mayor and Chairman of MCD Malaria Committee Divya Jaiswal today said this year 61 cases of malaria and 18 cases of dengue have been reported in the Capital.

At a meeting of health officials, he said at present the maximum temperature in the Capital was around 35 degrees and minimum ranges between 25 to 35 degrees, which is very conducive to breeding of mosquitoes. The rains in the four months too have created conditions favourable to dengue.

Mr Ved Prakash, deputy leader of the house, said premier institutes like Maulana Azad Medical College and G B Pant Hospital, Yatri Niwas near railway station, even the CPWD office in Minto road, were among major organisations that have been challaned by the MCD as mosquitoes were found breeding in their premises.

He said the areas where high density of mosquitoes was detected, were New Delhi Railway station and Teliwara situated in Shahdara with 15.5 per cent density and Uttam Nagar and Matialla extension (12.7 per cent) and ITBP camp in Sangam Vihar (28 per cent) Directing Municipal Health officer and all concerned officials to initiate steps to control dengue and malaria, the Acting Mayor stressed on the need to conduct door to door surveys.

He said the rise in malaria and dengue cases this year is a matter of great concern. ''A total of 61 cases of malaria have been reported as compared to 49 last year. Similarly, 18 dengue cases have been reported so far as compared to ten last year,'' he said.

The officials said the MCD was carrying out steps on war footing to combat breeding of mosquitoes but control of these dangerous vector-borne diseases was not possible without the help of the people.

Giving details of work done by the MCD at a meeting of health officials, Mr Jaiswal said domestic breeding checkers have so far visited houses and offices 112,60593 times. Mosquitoes were found breeding in 52,972 premises. In 50,674 cases, legal notices were issued and prosecution action has been launched against 4576 defaulters.
