Med University will be set up in Thrissur: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 21(UNI) The Kerala Government has decided to set up a Medical University in Thrissur, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said today.

Briefing Cabinet decisions to reporters here, he said the Cabinet had given its approval for establishing the University and Ms Usha Titus, IAS, would be appointed as its Project Director.

Mr Achuthandan said the Cabinet had also taken a decision to set up an ESI Medical College at Kollam.

It had also taken a decision to authorise Electricity Department to remain in the Kerala State Electricity Board in the public sector itself The Chief Minister said the Cabinet had decided to include vegetable, banana, fish and meat in the food security scheme, besides paddy milk and egg and added that a target for food production would be fixed for each year.

Stating that a campaign would be launched for the implementation of the scheme, he said monitoring committees would be appointed for district-level coordination.

The Cabinet decided to organise workshops with the participation of local bodies in September.

He said the government had urged the Centre to give a subsidy of Rs 15 to coconut oil.

Six killed in encounter with Maoist guerrillas in south Bihar

Gaya, Aug 21 (UNI) At least six people, including four Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) personnel, were killed and as many injured in a fierce encounter with the Maoist guerrillas near Raniganj Bazar area in this south Bihar district today. Police said the encounter, continued for nearly half and hour, started as the heavily armed extremists attacked a jeep carrying the SAP jawans, when it reached near a secluded spot killing four jawans instantly and injuring.....

Daily import of essentials not reaching people

Srinagar, Aug 21 (UNI) A majority of depots of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) are without ration, though the authorities claimed that hundreds of trucks carrying essentials are arriving here daily from Jammu. Meanwhile, private traders also alleged that they are not getting stock from outside while those dealing in Kashmir arts said their vehicles on the way to different Indian states were stranded at different places on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway for the past.....
