Indo-US nuclear deal: Will India get N-waiver?

{image-Indo-us-n-deal-inside_21082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}New Delhi, Aug 21: Meetings and discussions are over! Its now waiting time for India. The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) will decide in the next 72 hours whether to sanction a nuclear waiver to India or not.

If sources are to be believed India is confident of winning the waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers Group in the next 72 hours. The sources were positive that there would be no need for another NSG round next month as has been widely speculated. However, they admitted that some challenges remain. Winning over Austria and Ireland is seen as crucial. Both the countries have strong non-proliferation concerns. They say these concerns need to be reflected in the waiver document.

The Indian delegation led by Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon briefed the representatives of 45 member countries of NSG for about 30 minutes detailing India's case, conveying its commitments towards non-proliferation and seeking to allay fears, if any. After the collective briefing, Menon and Prime Minister's special envoy Shyam Saran met representatives of NSG countries separately in groups.

Participants later said the briefing, held in a 'positive' atmosphere, was 'good and useful'. After the first day's intense deliberations at the meeting of the 45-nation grouping and a special briefing by India for the member countries, New Delhi said it was 'tough game' but expressed optimism about getting the exemption.
