Indo-B'desh border conference begins with issues on table

Dhaka, Aug 21 (UNI) Border conference between Bangladesh and India today began at BDR headquarters here to discuss a long list of contentious issues between the two neighbours.

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Ashish Kumar Mitra is heading a 19-member delegation, while Director General of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Major General Shakil Ahmed is leading a 22-member team.

The conference will conclude with the signing of a Joint Record of Discussion (JRD) on August 25.

Meanwhile, DG Mitra paid a courtesy call on Home Adviser Maj Gen (Retd) MA Matin at the Home Ministry in the afternoon.

During the meeting, bilateral issues came up and both sides emphasised on joint activities in the frontier areas to reduce trans-border crimes, said a Home Ministry official.

The Home Adviser appreciated BSF's role in Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971, the official added.

Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakrabarty and other senior officials were also present in the conference.

3 women drown while taking bath in sea

Visakhapatnam, Aug 21 (UNI) Three women were drowned when they went to take bath in the sea here today. Police said four women, residents of Akkayyapalem area in the city, had gone to take a dip in the sea and offer prayer. One of them stood at the shore while the other three went into the water when the mishap occured. Pakistan encouraging unrest in J and K : Anand Sharma

New Delhi, Aug 21 (UNI) India today accused Pakistan of encouraging the present unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that there was no room for ''brazen assault'' on national unity and integrity. Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, said elements within the valley have received succour and support from Pakistan. ''That is a cause of concern,'' he told CNN-IBN. Srinagar, Aug 21 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir State Advisory Council has recalled R V Raju, IPS, from central deputation while it has also approved posting of Ashok Bhan as DGP(CID). The council which met today under the chairmanship of Governor N N Vohra approved recalling of Mr Raju from central deputation with immediate effect.
