Floods leave a trail of destruction in Uttarakhand

Dehradun/Bheemwala, Aug 21 : Uttarakhand streets in several low-lying towns are submerged and fields are flooded with water following heavy rains for the past few days.

Road transport has been badly affected as several roads in the state have been damaged due to the incessant rains.

The national highway that links Uttrakhand to Himachal Pradesh is blocked. Residents in Dehradun complained of frequent traffic jams.

"It has been raining heavily and the rivers are overflowing. Commuting has become a big problem for us," said Shahid, a resident.

Farmers said that their crops have been destroyed adversely affecting their livelihood.

"Our standing maize crop has been destroyed and acres of land are in water. We won't have anything to eat," said Satpal, a farmer.

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered floods across the region and the downpours have swamped villages and caused landslides.

According to reports, hundreds of old buildings have collapsed due to heavy rains and hectares of farmland are submerged under water.
