Bengal to get globe's largest solar power complex

Kolkata, Aug 21 (UNI)Bhaskar Silicon Ltd will set up the world's largest solar power complex, also the country's first polysilicon solar project, entailing an overall investment of around Rs 5,500 crore in Haldia.

Informing this to newspersons here today, Bhaskar Silicon Managing Director Jyoti Poddar said a land area of 800 acre was required for the project, out of which 200 acre had already been obtained from the Haldia Development Authority.

However, the equity structure for Bhaskar Silicon Ltd, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) floated by Enviro Energy, had not been decided yet, Mr Poddar said adding SREI, Centrotherm and Perseus would be the partners in the venture.

He elaborated that the entire project would executed in three phases with initial investment of Rs 350 crore, Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 1,100 crore respectively in a consecutive manner.

''The investment might increase as per requirement,'' he added.

He estimated that the entire project would be completed by 2012 with the first phase to be accomplished by 2010. The integrated solar power complex would produce polysilicons around 2,500 tonnes per year, along with 250-MW solar panels and 250-MW solar modules.

The company has also entered into a tie-up with Germany based Centrotherm for setting up the world's largest integrated polysilicon and solar manufacturing complex.

''The plant will help in the generation of 250 MW of solar power annually in India, which will be in line with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's vision for generating 5,000 MW of solar power during the Eleventh Plan,'' the MD added.

State Power Minister Mrinal Banerjee, also present on the occasion, informed that the state's regulatory commision had fixed the tarrif for solar power at Rs 12 per unit, adding two-three ''solar parks'' were coming up in Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum districts.

Speaking on the occasion, West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation MD S P Gon Chaudhuri said the country's energy requirement would become the third in the world by 2030, adding India had a potential of generating 6,00,000 MW of solar energy per year.

'' Only two per cent of the country's GDP was spent towards addressing climate change, '' Mr Gon Chaudhuri maintained.

Inflation rate 16 years high at 12.63%; worst is yet to come

Star India launches first regional channel in Bengali

Kolkata, Aug 21 (UNI) Star India Pvt Ltd, India's largest media conglomerate, today unveiled its first regional general entertainment channel in Bengali, christened Star Jolsha. Star India Pvt Ltd Vice-President (Marketing and Communication) Prem Kamath said the channel would provide an array of programmes, fiction, non-fiction programmes, mythology, movies and reality shows. Mr Kamath informed that the Star India would launch a total of six regional general entertainment channels, adding the launch of Gujarati and Marathi.....

Bank manager goes to jail for killing cashier

Sasaram, Aug 21 (UNI) A fast track court here today handed down a life term to a rural bank manager on charges of murdering a cashier three years ago.
