Air traffic at Mysore airport expected to begin this Dasara

Mysore, Aug 21 (UNI) Air traffic with ATR aircraft to the city of palaces is expected to begin by Dasara this year with completion of the first phase of the upgradation work of the Mysore airport.

Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the airport works at Mandakali airport near here, Principal Secretary, Civil Aviation Aravind Jadav and Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation K N Srivatsava said the present work was expected to complete by January 2009. However, the state government's demand of aircraft flying would be commenced by next year Dasara.

They said the second phase work that has been going along with the first phase, required 311 acres of land. ''State government has agreed for the same and already, 123 acres of land is available.

The diversion of the State Highway between Mysore and Ooty has already been started for the expansion of the airport,'' they added.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) was not only looking to modernisation of the present airport, but also wanted it to become a national one, they said. ''Two runways, measuring 1,740 m and 1,350 m, respectively have been prepared in the first phase to cater the need for smaller aircrafts like ATR aircrafts, but it would be taken up further with longer runways to accommodate bigger planes like Boeing 737,'' they noted.

Mr Jadav said the taxiway peripheral road, boundary wall, a technical block cum control tower, a fire station, parking lot and electricity sub station would be taken up in the first phase.

Mr Vijyashankar, MP (Mysore), said the government would not disturb Mandakali villagers. ''However, the AAI wanted to shift the entire village as the airport runways were near the village,'' he added.
