Ben Johnson's fall from grace A former Canadian sprinter who challenged the supremacy of Carl Lewis in 100m dash and did it successfully so. He lost to his arch rival Lewis in 1987 World Championships, Rome but avanged the defeat in 1988 Seoul Oly with a world record timing of 9.79s. However, Johnson's urine samples were found to contain Stanozolol, and he was disqualified three days later. He later admitted having used steroids when he ran his 1987 world record, which caused the IAAF to rescind that record as well. Johnson lid open a can of worms when he revealed that hundreds of other athletes including the top notch sprinters from United States took to performance-enhancing drugs in order to remain on an equal footing with their rivals. His claims beared some weight as his rivals Lewis, Linford Christie and Dennis Mitchell returned with positive for banned substances in the years followed but unlike Johnson these sprinters were lucky enough to still hold their medals.

 

China warns of Games hijack threat

Beijing, Aug 21: China has warned of hijack threats during next year's Beijing Olympics in a country it says is increasingly infiltrated by international terrorists, state media reported today.
