Itanagar, Jun 23 (UNI) Achieving a glorious distinction in the mountaineering history of Arunachal Pradesh, Tapi Mra has become the first mountaineer of the state to scale the 6,654 metre high Mera Peak in Nepal's Khumbu Valley.
Braving the vagaries of nature, Mra successfully completed his 'pre-Everest expedition' on June 20. He is scheduled to set out on his Mount Everest mission later this year.
Mra, who hails from Lemeking area of Upper Subansiri district, had also climbed the 6,160 meter high Island Peak barefoot in the same valley on April 27 last year.
The Nepal Mountaineering Association has recognised 33 peaks of Khumbu Valley as 'B' group peaks, which are traversed by the mountaineers prior to their Everest expeditions.
The 26-year-old youth, who landed on the Mera peak at around 0400 hours on June 20, unfurled the Indian tricolour, along with a flag with Arunachal Pradesh inscribed on it.
On June 12, Mra's expedition was flagged off from Itanagar by state PWD and Urban Development Minister Nabam Tuki. An amount of Rs 10.75 lakh was also sanctioned by the state government to aid his mission for Mount Everest.
On June 16 morning Mra arrived at Lugla, a small hill station in Khumbu Valley. From there, accompanied by his climbing guide Ang Dindi Sherpa as well as porters Pema Sherpa and Dorjee Sherpa, he walked upto Chungtanu camp to halt for the night at sub-zero temperature.
On June 17 they left Chungtanu and trekked upto Kote camp and stayed for the night. They reached the base camp next day and high camp on subsequent day.
Armed with a degree in mountaineering from Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, Mra undertook para gliding course from Manali. He also did a basic water sports course from Regional Water Sports Centre Pongdam in Himachal Pradesh. So far, the mounatineer has scaled more than ten peaks.
