Next assembly session in new legislature complex

Srinagar, May 12: The next and probably the last session of the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly before elections would be held in the new legislature complex, the construction of which was completed in 26 years. The foundation stone of the complex was laid in 1982 by then Chief Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah but after some time on the project, it was stopped in the wake of militancy erupting in 1989.

However, the work was resumed in 1999 only to be left incomplete in 2003.

An official spokesman said only 25 per cent work was done for about 12 years.

But after taking over as Chief Minister, Azad evinced interest in the project and set a deadline of one year for the completion of the project.

Work was taken up in August 2007 and in less than a year the remaining 70 per cent work is now complete.

Presently, final touches are being given to the complex besides landscaping of the lawns.

Mr Azad visited the complex and instructed the engineers to complete the project within the deadline set by him.

Spokesman said the work on the project was in full swing to have the next session of the legislature in the new complex.
