Google goes Desi, launch translation service

Bangalore, May 5: Google today announced the launch of Google Translate™ translation service for Hindi. This new launch enables automated translation between Hindi and English. To translate some text, a web page, or issue a query in Hindi or translation of results from English can be done at: http://www.google.com/translate_t. This page can also be accessed by visiting www.google.co.in and clicking on the “Language Tools" menu option to the right of the search box.

Of the total literate Indian population, only about 13 per cent are English literate. Keeping this in mind, this launch is a step towards ensuring that Hindi speaking users in India can benefit from the richness of the internet, regardless of their familiarity with English language.

Google India claims this launch to be the latest in a series of updates that are all focused on making it easier for multi-lingual users in India.

Some of the related products offered by google are given below:

Easier Data entry: This helps to type Hindi using regular keyboard. Users need to type the word as it sounds. For example, word “mera" can be typed using regular English characters, hit the space bar, and it will get converted to Hindi word same thing). This is available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Scrap your friends: Scrap facility is now available in all other Google products. Orkut scraps can now be send in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Express your views: Users can express their views on a subject they are very passionate or knowledgeable about and can create blog and write blog posts in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Find information: Go to Google Hindi search page and type query using English characters. It will get converted to Hindi and suggest queries based on what is typed. For example, if user want to find information about Amitabh Bachchan, type “Amitabh" and they will get in Hindi.

NBC sees Web video JV launch in September

New York, June 15: Media conglomerate NBC Universal said on Thursday it expects a new online video venture it is building with News Corp. to launch in September.
