Summon US Ambassador to protest advice on Iran: Left to Govt

New Delhi, Apr 23 (UNI) Strongly objecting to the reported US advice to India to talk tough with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad on the nuclear issue during his coming visit, Left and UNPA members today asked the Government to summon the US Ambassador to India to register its protest against Washington's ''unsolicited'' suggestion.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha today, Ms Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) said India should deal firmly with the ''imperial arrogance'' of the US and its attempt to indulge in world policing.

Though India had conveyed to the US that it did not need its advice as to how to conduct its relation with Iran, that was not enough, and the matter needed summoning of US Ambassador David Mulford, said Ms Karat.

Referring to the US suggestion to India to cooperate with it in containing the nuclear programme of Iran, the CPI(M) Member said the attitude showed that the US considered India a junior partner in its matters of foreign policy.

She said Iran was a signitary to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty(NPT) and its nuclear programme was under international safeguards.

Other Left members and also those belonging to the UNPA endorsed Ms Karat's demand for summoning the US Ambassador.
