Two dead, seventeen missing as boat capsizes near Pune

Pune, Apr 24 : An over crowded boat carrying 28 people capsized at the Bhatgar Dam near Pune on Wednesday evening, killing at least two.

A massive search operation has been launched as nearly 17 missing people are presumed to be dead. Only two bodies have been recovered so far.

"Out of the 28 people many are children. The main reason for this mishap is that the boat was carrying people beyond its capacity. Gutsy winds compounded the problem and the boat capsized," Pune District Collector Prabhakar Rao Deshmukh said.

"All the people were from one village and returning from a marriage party. Nine of them swam to safety," official sources said.
