Shillong, Apr 24 (UNI) The Congress today urged the Meghalaya government to seek Central intervention in sorting out the boundary dispute with Assam.
''The state government must initiate steps to resolve the border dispute with Assam before the boundary dispute goes out of hand,'' Congress legislator Founder Strong Cajee said in the Assembly.
The MLA was moving a resolution since the state of Meghalaya ''lacks'' proper boundaries, territorial or otherwise, with Assam.
Urging the government to initiate development in villages bordering Assam, Mr Cajee said the Assam government was ''silently invading'' Meghalaya with Dispur providing development activities to villages bordering its state.
''The government must act now before the situation goes out of hand,'' he emphasised.
His party colleague, Saleng Sangma said the people living in villages bordering Assam were always in tension due to frequent harassment from those living on the other side of the state.
''Most of the youths are even forced to join militant outfits to protect themselves,'' Mr Sangma said.
