BMC demolishes over 400 huts on Juhu airport land

Mumbai, Apr 24 (UNI) In a massive demolition drive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today razed more than 400 illegal slums on the airport land at Juhu in north-west Mumbai.

According to DMC (special) Milind Shamburkar, ''The land was illegally occupied by slumdwellers for some time and they were issued notices to vacate the same. The demolition had taken place after they refused to vacate the premises.'' It may be noted that the Maharashtra government has undertaken massive modernisation plans for the airport, which also includes the clearing of the slums on the airport land and making way for other constructions.

The demolition was undertaken amids huge protests by the slum dwellers and the BMC squad needed protection from the local police for carrying out the demolitions.
