Asian groups, elderly Americans to significantly affect US' socio-economic outlook

Washington, April 24 : People with Asian and Hispanic backgrounds as well as older Americans will have greater effects on the country's socio-economic outlook than previously thought, according to a report.

The Public Policy and Aging Report (PPAR) suggests that Hispanics and Asian immigrants have dispersed away from the traditional magnets of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Miami to new destinations in all parts of the country.

It suggests that the immigrants' dispersal has started to show a profound impact on the entire country.

The report authored by William H. Frey, a research professor at the University of Michigan, also upends traditional notions of how and where Americans spend their later years.

It says that senior populations will grow fastest in the US over the next 35 years, primarily due to ageing rather than migration.

According to the report, in Georgia, the number of the sexagenarian residents will rise by more than 40 per cent from 2010 to 2020 due to the ageing of existing residents, while migration's contribution in this increase will be less than three per cent.
