Oxygen level in River Ganga dips alarmingly

Varanasi, April 22, 2008: Millions are being spent to preserve the sacred river Ganges but the pollution levels in the river have reached an alarming level.

The Ganges, which finds a mention in mythological as well as historical contexts, is in a pitiable condition as the dissolved oxygen is dropping to alarmingly low levels. The banks of the river present an ironical picture where on one side religious activities take place and on the other side, heaps of garbage lies unattended.

Century-old building collapses in Varanasi

Varanasi, July 27: At least one person was killed and four others were injured when an over 100-year old four-storeyed residential building collapsed here due to incessant rains this morning. Police sources said one of the injured was said to be in a critical condition. The building, in a dilapidated condition, was situated near the Pande Ghat in the temple town. At least three people who were trapped under the debris have been rescued.....

Varanasi, July 24: An aged man was killed aftcr he was run over fatally by a speeding train in the Manduadih area here today. Chote Lal (62) was knocked down by a train while he was trying to sneak through a railway crossing near Nathupur Dagra on a cycle yesterday, police said. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Varanasi, July 14: A trader and his three servants were wounded when unidentified criminals hurled a bomb at them in the Chowk area here this evening. Taufiq, a cosmetic product trader, had just pulled downed the shutters of his shop in the Sarai Harha area when three people reached the spot and hurled a crude bomb at the trader.
