Save endangered Olive Ridley turtle; Mahtab

New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJD today urged the government to direct the DRDO not to undertake testing of missiles in Orissa's region during the period of nesting of Olive Riedley turtle, an endangered species.

Raising the issue during zero hour in the Lok Sabha, he said the Defence Research and Development Organisation had entered into an agreement with the Orissa government that it will not undertake testing of missiles nor use bright lights during the breeding period of the endangered turtle. Alleging violation of the agreement, he said because of it the turtle missed its annual nesting period this year.

The BJD member urged the government to issue the necessary directions to the DRDO which is scheduled to testfire Agni-3 this month-end.

Govt upbeat about success of rural development programmes

Over 37 m access BPL ration cards issued; 6.7 m bogus: Pawar

New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) As many as 37.6 million extra BPL ration cards have been issued in the country, of which 6.74 million were found to be bogus, Food Minister Sharad Pawar informed the Lok Sabha today. According to the Planning Commission and the Rural Development Ministry guidelines, there are 65.2 million BPL families in the country, but the State Governments have issued ration cards to 100.28 million such families. Rs 75,000 cr for development of Naxal-affected states: Patil

New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) Home Minister Shivraj Patil today assured the Lok Sabha that the government was adopting a multi-dimensional approach towards dealing with terrorism and naxalism by using force wherever necessary and allocating Rs 75,000 crore for the economic development of ten states affected by such problems.
