Over 10,500 senior citizens killed during 2004-06

New Delhi, Apr 22: A total of 10,696 senior citizens were murdered between 2004-06 across the country, the government said today. The government informed the Lok Sabha that while 9732 senior citizens (aged over 50 years) were murdered in the said period, 964 others were killed where charges under culpable homicide not amounting to murder were framed. In 2004, 3149 senior citizens were murdered, including 664 women.

In 2005 the figure stood at 3215, including 644 women. In the year 3368 senior citizens,including 694 women were murdered Union minister of state for Home Radhika V Selvinformed the lower house in a written reply. Culpable homicide not amounting to murder is a situation where the act by death is done with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death but is not done with the intention of causing death or such bodily injury as is likely to cause death. Under this section, 356 senior citizens, including 52 women were killed. In 2005, the figure went down to 333, including 56 women. In 2006, the figure further dropped to 275. A total of 31 women were murdered in 2006 under this section.
